Litigation funding blocked in Ireland

According to an article in the Irish Times, the presiding Justice of a recent case upheld the law that the use of third party litigation funding is illegal under the law of champerty.
Champerty is a prohibition of third-parties to have a financial stake in a lawsuit. The Irish Times states that, “This case was the first time that a direct challenge has been made to the law in an Irish court”.
